Vlog #8 — In which 100 copies of my book arrive!

Remember how I was very amused a few days ago by the fact that it cost less money to buy my own book from a third party source, rather than direct from the publisher (iUniverse)? Well, the 100 copies I ordered through Chapters.Indigo.ca arrived yesterday, and they’re glorious. Share in my joy with me via my latest vlogging attempt:

So they’re all here, they’re awesome, and now I have to figure out what to do with them all. Definitely giveaways of some sort … I’ll have to look into a book signing … a couple copies donated to the library … and then whatever else I can come up with.

As for the randomly faded dropcaps in the softcover version, I’ve contacted iUniverse about it, and they’re looking into a solution. Mother is righteously outraged on my behalf (“Your book consultant assured you that the printer copy was just a fluke, and now you’ve got 50 copies with that same fluke! You should be furious with them for lying to you! They need to fix this immediately and apologize!”), whereas I am taking a more zen approach. Expect the worst, and nothing can disappoint you. It’s working out well so far. I’m not going to let up until iUniverse figures out why this is happening and fixes it, obviously, and I’ll explain that I’m displeased, but I don’t think anger is the way to go.

Other than that … life is good. Got ma books, got ma magnets, got ma … slippers? There’s no stopping me now!!!

  1. Hahaha, congratulations! I’m excited for you!

  2. Most excellent vlog. I am making a happy face for you. *gurns*

    • Lol, gurns. I don’t even know what that means 😀

      • You should totally Google it. There are gurning competitions in this part of the world. Mega fun. *gurns again*

        • Oh my. I can’t believe there are competitions!!! That would be hilarious to watch on TV. I believe on the internet gurning has recently started to be referred to as “derping”.

          • Ah – that explains a lot. I did wonder what ‘derp’ meant. Thank you for brightening up my day, again!

            *derps off*

  3. Candace Knoebel

Congrats, Michelle! I can’t wait to sit in front of my novels!!! Must feel wonderful! Wish I lived closer so I could go to one of your signings lol. Stay cool!

    • Haha thanks. I sometimes think my life would be a lot easier if I lived in the States — everything cool seems to happen there. I guess it’s never too late to move?

  4. Michelle, you always make me laugh! You and your mother continue to be adorable. The books look fantastic, and I’m so glad you’re getting all of your changes made by iU. I loved the stop action unpacking; however, your mother stole the show in the background. Have fun as you move the books from your coffee table to the outside world! 🙂 Congratulations again!

    • Haha I know! I was so excited to try my hand at stop action, and then mother had to be hilarious in the background and distract all the attention away from the books. RAAAAGE!!! And thanks 🙂 I’m pretty psyched. I really do need to figure out how to get rid of them, though. Ummm …

  5. Congratulations!

  6. Awesome! That’s a lot of books, I’m surprised the weight didn’t break the table. 😀

    • Oh my god, you have no idea. I got my friend to help me carry them up, but when we showed up at the Canada Post truck, the mail guy was like, “No. You need a dolly. Don’t even try to lift them.”

  7. Congratulations and you are lucky to have such a great editor/mother/representative/publicist!!!! (Your mom is seriously amazing.) This is so exciting!!

  8. inkspeare

Love it 🙂 God bless your Mom, she is so supportive and awesome, what a blessing!

  9. Five things:

    1) You’re CANADIAN? How did I miss that?
    2) You and your mom are amazing.
    3) The books look fantastic!
    4) LOL @ “pages! With words!”
    5) Love that cat picture, thank you for sharing.

Also, I want to win your book, but I guess that can wait…

    IMMIN DANG!

    • Five responses:

      1) Fo shizzle, home skizzle.
      2) Agree.
      3) AREN’T THEY GORGEOUS???
      4) It’s a crucial part of any book, and yet when reading book reviews, how many times do you come across someone complimenting the author on their inclusion of words? HMM?
      5) Cats are the proverbial bomb.

Book giveaways incoming. Stay tuned 😀

      IMMIN DANG!

  10. Congratulations!!! That looked so fun. 🙂 I bet having the hardcovers is really great. I’ve only done mine in paperback and I know how amazing that feels. One day…

    • The hardcovers are glorious. I would buy exclusively hardcover, except they’re more expensive, and I want people to have the option. You should definitely go hardcover!!! They’re so shiny … O_o

  11. The only thing that could be better is if they were gourmet cupcakes.

  12. Oh wow. That is one amazing pile of books! It must’ve felt fantastic having them all in front of you like that. Also, side note: your mum is awesome. xD

Oh, and another thing; I nominated you for the ABC Award! http://t.co/GwSDKBdqPr

    • Lol, I take it you enjoyed watching her flit around in the background of the unpacking montage? And thanks for the nomination!!!! 🙂

  13. How exciting! Congratulations to you!

  14. That’s so exciting about the book signings! I will stop by the link above, but love hardcovers, too!

    • I think there’s a link to the hardcover if you go the softcover link I posted. Or just google “Amazon Imminent Danger Proulx” and see what comes up, lol. I’m psyched for the book signing too! But it would be rolled in with an author reading, which means I’d have to … you know … read my book to people. I have a feeling that will be an extremely awkward and cringe-worthy sight to see, lol. I should get someone to record it so everyone on WordPress can laugh at (with?) me.

  15. Ohhhhh man, you can practically build a little fort out of your books! That is just SO stellar. 😀 ❤ I'm ridiculously happy on your behalf! I just can't imagine that crazy pride when you open up a box with your own beautiful book inside. Some day, man, some day… Even the silly iUniverse mixups can't spoil THAT. Awesome vlog, as always–I love seeing you and your mum! I told my library to buy a copy of your book, so hopefully when I get home for the summer they will have taken my advice, and I can check it out and brag to people that I know the author~

    • Oooh yay! Do libraries do that? Just … buy books because you tell them to? If so, that’s awesome. Now, I don’t think my book has a Library control # (or whatever it’s called), so I don’t know if libraries actually can buy it. *crosses fingers*

I did consider building a book fort, but construction has never been my forte. That’s why I mentioned my bed plan — even I can’t possibly screw up just laying the books beside each other on a flat surface. 😀

      • Ha ha, lol. xD Well, I can’t FORCE them to buy it, but I mentioned that I had discovered a new book I really liked, and they said that they looked it up on Amazon, it had some good reviews, and they’d consider it! 🙂 So I guess that’s the best you can do. I have no idea what a library control # is.. Like the ISBN? If your book doesn’t have an ISBN, THAT could be a problem, but I don’t know about a library code. Hmm.

        • Woo! They looked it up! I need to get ALL THE REVIEWS so no one will doubt its awesomeness. My friend offered to make 50 fake accounts and write me glowing reviews, but that’s kind of blatantly cheating, lol. I’ll just have to get them the old-fashioned way. Through blood, sweat, and tears. Somehow I doubt people will write me reviews if I offer them blood, sweat, and tears in exchange, though. Unless they’re creepy types, in which case … nah, don’t even wanna go there, lol. And I think a library control # is like a special ISBN for libraries. I do have an ISBN, so that shouldn’t be a problem. And now I must work. Live long and prosper!

  16. Super congrats! I can’t wait until I have my own pile of books to roll around in like Scrooge McDuck.

And thanks for the cat pic. I had a great laugh. 😀

  17. AWE….. SOME!!!! 😉

  18. CONGRATULATIONS! They look fantastic 🙂

    Xx

  19. You look so happy with your pile of books 🙂 Nice to see. Do you reckon any libraries you donate the books to might like to have some kind of event to spread the word, like a Q&A session, excerpts readings, library-based competition, or a few things along those lines? Libraries like local authors, don’t they? Maybe they could pop up some posters of your book cover on the walls to advertise, that’d be cool 🙂

    • I did stop in to the local branch yesterday to chat. They do indeed do author readings/signings, and they’re free of charge too! The only hiccup is they plan them months in advance, so I’ll have to wait until the summer. Which is fine — it’s just nice to know that libraries are willing to support local authors. I didn’t think of the poster thing … I’ll have to see what they say. 🙂

  20. Gwen

Very exciting – congrats! Loved the Vlog.

    • Thanks 😀 I’m pretty psyched. I stopped in at the library yesterday to ask about book readings/signings, and apparently they’re very possible — and very free! — so hopefully I can get rid of some copies that way 😀

  21. oh I know, I know … you can send me a signed copy!!!! And, love the cat photo

  22. Looks like you made a fort! So I trust the whole deal went over well? I remember expressing some doubt, but that stack looks pretty nice!

What do you think?
