Ever read one of those books that breaks apart genres? Something that takes an idea and turns it on its head, that does something completely different from what anyone would expect? Those are the books I respect – ones that aren’t afraid to try something new. I’m talking about things like A Song of Ice and Fire, Battle Royale, and other books like that.

Well, a friend recently published a book that defies genre expectations in a very different way, by taking two genres and blending them together. She wrote a book that combines the science fiction genre with the romance genre.

At first I was confused, but then I really gave it some thought. Blending those genres is one of those ideas that’s so smart that it seems really, really obvious. Plenty of girls are into science fiction, but nobody really capitalizes on that in culture today…

  2. That was a really nice recommendation! 🙂 I do think that Syfy has been kind of sorely ignored as a potentially really great YA genre. A few books have been coming out taking advantage of that, but yeah. I’m all for bringing back cool new Syfy!

    • Agree! I never really thought of it as genre-bending when I wrote it. I’m still not sure I do. I just think of it as Star Wars sans lightsabers, plus six-armed lizardmen, for teenagers. Then again, Star Wars does combine genres, doesn’t it? Romance … action … sci-fi … whatever the Force is (spiritualism?) …
